Happy Thanksgiving!

November 21, 2007

I don’t have time for a long post, but I wanted to say “Happy Thanksgiving” to everyone!  I can’t wait to catch up with all the blogs next week with stories of the cooking disasters (or successes) and pictures of kidlets and their faces covered in pumpkin pie.  My brother and I are headed up to Rhinelander to have Thanksgiving with my mom’s mom (just the 3 of us) – she’s called about 5 times since Sunday to see what time we’re leaving town.  And 5 times I told her that I won’t know when I’m leaving work until my boss says, “ok, you can go home!”.  Like she said, she’s old :)

I’m working on my Christmas music favorites cd this weekend, and I’m having a tough time picking 15 favorites.  I like all of them!  If you have any suggestions, please comment.  Here’s what I have so far:

  1. O Little Town of Bethlehem – Jewel
  2. Baby, It’s Cold Outside – from Elf soundtrack
  3. Strange Way to Save the World – 4Him
  4. White Christmas – Bing Crosby
  5. God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen – Barenaked Ladies w/ Sarah McLaughlin
  6. Mary’s Boy Child – Harry Belafonte
  7. Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer – Jack Johnson (he adds a verse – it’s great!)
  8. Christmas Canon – Trans Siberian Orchestra
  9. Oh Holy Night – from Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (remember that show?  Click here to hear the song – click here for the whole story)

Don’t drink the water and other things that are happening.

November 12, 2007

Seriously, I think our church needs to start bottling and selling the water.  EVERYONE is pregnant it seems like.  Personally, I’m surrounded by pregnant people – one at work, our friend next door and 4 (possibly 5) people at church and there will be announcements any day now from another coworker and a friend from Bible study.  This includes one couple that has tried for 10 years and was on the adoption train and a couple in the church’s extended family who were told it was medically impossible for them to have kids are now pregnant.  I think we need to expand our nursery :)

Apparently it’s been a while since I’ve posted anything real on here, so some of you may not know about this:  When Troy and Cherie left for Michigan, my brother and I were asked to help out Mike with the youth group.  I didn’t even need to think for a second before I said, “Absolutely”.  It’s a small group, and some of the problems are amplified because the group is so small.  And to be honest, I didn’t expect this to be a perfect group, but I didn’t expect to be thrown into the fire quite so quickly.  It’s good, though.  I’m definitely being stretched and growing, and we’re seeing a lot of growth in the kids in the last few months.  One girl asked if we could talk a few weeks ago, so I took her out for a scoop of custard and we just talked about some stuff that was going on with family & school.  I have no idea what I said, but something clicked with her and she realized she wasn’t saved, so she accepted Christ a week ago and was baptized last night.  There was one other girl that was baptized last night and another girl joined the church.  Plus, there were 2 other people baptized last night, which is always very exciting.  I’m very excited about the future for this group of kids – and if you’re a reader who knows who these kids are, please remember to pray for them.

Let’s see, what else is new?  I finally figured out Facebook, so you can find me there if you haven’t already.  I found a great new blog that I read almost daily – Life in Student Ministry.  I don’t agree with everything, but in general he has a lot of good information.  Kayaking is officially over for the year.  We still have to get some UV protectant spray and get the boats cleaned up and stored, but it’s done.  I’m working on a video of all our our kayaking pictures from this summer.  And seriously, why is November & December so impossibly crazy?  I still don’t feel like I caught up from last December.  We’ve been listening to Christmas music off an on at work for the last week.  This morning when Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s Christmas Canon in D came on, we started discussing how beautiful that would be for a Christmas wedding and brainstormed for a few minutes about champagne colored wedding dresses, black tuxes with tails and crimson red bridesmaid dresses with matching roses…ok nice picture, but seriously, who has time to add ANYTHING to December?  In my opinion, you’d need a death wish.  Ladies’ Tea (s), work “holiday” parties, birthdays (mine & my dads), family in town, going out of town, Christmas program for the kids at church; buying a tree, decorating the tree, keeping the tree watered and the cats out of it, decorating at church; Christmas shopping (which can never, ever be done in a single trip), fighting crowds, lines at the grocery store, no parking spaces at the stores, untangling Christmas lights.  By the time New Years comes around, we’re so exhausted, there’s really no wonder the tree doesn’t get put away until mid-January and the wreath stays on the house until Easter.  And this is all just me, without having the added pressure of scheduling kids into the mix!  Remind me to post again about Christmas Day, because that makes all of it worth it!

Sorry for the randomness - I’ll try to stay on top of this blogging thing :)
